Many users of SJHMPF will already be aware of two significant proposals that are currently being considered that impact on the local area in Merton:
1. The redevelopment of the Gas Works Site adjacent to the SJHMPF, and
2. The development of the sporting facilities of the park by Fulham FC
There have already been some preliminary discussions about each of these to which the Friends have been invited but neither project has yet been agreed, nor planning applications submitted.
The gas works project is particularly complex as it sits in the Royal Borough of Kingston on Thames, but also affects Merton and Sutton. Clearly, our concerns are focussed on any impact from such a project such as: environmental issues related to drainage of the park; the potential impact on Beverley Brook; and the protected woodland area. In addition, access to, and the use of, the park by the considerable number of new residents needs to be thought through carefully as does the inevitable additional traffic problems that will result. The developer is Berkley Homes and they hope to submit a planning application by the end of this year. In a broader context, many locals are extremely concerned about the proposed height of the buildings which could have as many as 16 stories. There was a public consultation on 24 July and more meetings are planned.
The Fulham proposal is less complex but potentially could have a much greater direct impact on the park. The proposed creation of an all-weather football pitch will understandably be welcomed by our local footballers. But it probably will further reduce the park facilities that have open access to everyone and the supporting Fulham FC building (potentially built on the crazy golf site) will inevitably use either green space or takeover existing developed space in the park and there will be a need for additional parking for Fulham FC, none of which is supported by the Friends Group.
